Recently, the International Energy Agency's semiconductor lighting technology group for end-use energy equipment released a research report on "Smart Lighting - New Features Affecting Energy Consumption". It focuses on various energy consumption tests for smart lighting, and gives a comprehensive overview of the characteristics of smart lighting based on actual test data, and provides a number of relevant suggestions for policy makers, lighting product manufacturers and other relevant parties, in order to give full play to Energy saving potential of smart lighting products.

The report introduces the characteristics of smart lighting that affect energy consumption in 7 parts. The main contents include:
Smart Lighting Product Testing Guidelines and Test Procedures.

Standby power analysis (data from a test of 236 smart lamps/luminaires from 67 manufacturers during 2015-2020).

Analysis of the effect of dimming and color tone on light efficiency and luminous flux.

Standby power issues when the product becomes more complex due to the addition of new functions.

Smart Lighting Market Barriers Assessment, including user-friendliness, interoperability, conformance, system openness, standards, and connection and interoperability with existing wired control systems, etc.

The report makes the following recommendations:
It is recommended that the relevant test methods in the report be incorporated into relevant regulations and standards.

Overall efficacy is recommended as a metric for data analysis and comparison of smart lighting products.

It is recommended that manufacturers provide gateway energy consumption information for products and actively reduce gateway energy consumption. Future regulations may include gateway maximum power limits.

It is recommended that manufacturers provide the luminous flux, power and efficacy of the product in warm colors (color temperature 2700 K) and cool colors (color temperature 4000 K or 5000 K) on the packaging and online information; the color temperature range should be indicated when selling online, and the products in this color temperature range The luminous flux is less than 70% of the maximum luminous flux of the product.

Smart lighting manufacturers provide information on the luminous flux, power and efficacy ratings of their products at different dimming levels (75%, 50% and 25% light output at factory default color temperature).

Regulators are advised to require manufacturers to provide switches for non-illuminated functions to reduce energy consumption for non-essential functions.

It is recommended that relevant government departments, industry practitioners and other relevant parties continue to improve people's awareness of energy consumption of smart lighting, continuously enhance the energy-saving efficiency of products, and improve user experience.
