The official website announced the results of the deliberations of the "Fourth Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Minamata Convention on Mercury" held in March this year. The meeting adopted a proposal to amend Annex A (mercury-added products) to the Minamata Convention on Mercury.

According to the amendments, the production, import or export of two types of mercury-added lighting products, such as self-ballasted fluorescent lamps below 30 watts and cold cathode fluorescent lamps for electronic displays, will be banned from 2025. See the table below for details:

The Minamata Convention on Mercury entered into force in August 2017 and currently has 137 parties. For a long time, the China Lighting Association has been actively concerned about the negotiation process and implementation of the "Minamata Convention on Mercury", and has cooperated with various member states of the Global Lighting Association to jointly participate in and promote the implementation of the requirements of the global lighting industry. Maintain the sustainable and healthy development of the lighting industry on the basis of the market and ensuring consumer demand.

In addition to the requirements of the Convention, based on the development goals of promoting energy conservation, emission reduction and environmental protection worldwide, many countries or regions around the world are also formulating replacement or elimination plans for mercury-added lighting products in their own countries or regions. For example, the new EU RoHS Directive proposes that from 2023, fluorescent lamp products will be phased out in steps, locations and specifications; ASEAN, Africa and other regions are also promoting the market of LED lighting products by continuously improving the energy efficiency level of lighting products. transformation.

With the development and maturity of LED lighting technology, the production of fluorescent lamps has declined rapidly since 2012. In 2021, the total output of fluorescent lamps in my country will be less than 800 million (about 1/10 of the total output of fluorescent lamps in 2012), accounting for the production of major electric light sources in my country. about 5% of the total. In recent years, my country has actively developed the LED lighting industry, and the product structure has been significantly optimized. After the implementation of the Minamata Convention, my country's lighting industry still has obvious advantages in the global lighting market.
